279. I’m Already Laughing

It’s about time Maya Rudolph gets her own show – well a shot at it, at least. It was announced today that at 10 p.m. on May 19th, NBC will air The Maya Rudolph Show. The sketch/variety show will star her and her famous friends (aka Kristen Bell, Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen (seriously what isn’t Fred up to these days?), Craig Robinson, Sean Hayes, and Chris Parnell. We should expect songs and sketches – does that mean SNL’s 90’s girl band Gemini’s Twin will be making an appearance? I seriously hope so.

Janelle Monae will be a musical guest while Raphael Saadiq will serve as bandleader. Pretty cool. Oh, and, of course, Lorne Michaels is executive producing. Let’s just hope it gets green lighted for an entire series. Because we need a woman in late night and Maya is the perfect person for the job.

*Note to self: See if Maya is on LinkedIn. Send her my resume. Instant friends and colleagues.

213. Who’s Funniest?

Rolling Stone just released their list of the 50 Funniest People Now. Some of my favorites made the cut (Mindy Kaling, Aziz Ansari, John Mulaney, Melissa McCarthy). This led me to realize that the Ellen’s and Rosie’s of the world are being pushed out for more quirky, character-type comedians. Take Lena Dunham. Would she have had the same success twenty years ago? Thank God for Kristen Wiig and the Portlandia duo Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. They’ve led us into a new era of comedy. An era that I hope sticks around for a while.

*Note to self: Call Rachel Dratch and Amy Sedaris. Ask them if they want to make a digital short called On The Rocks. We could sip chilled Patron while discussing today’s biggest issues. Like why they didn’t make the Rolling Stone list. Did I mention we shot the promo already?

187. Campbell’s Goes Hipster

Coconut Curry w/ Chicken & Shitake Mushroom

Creamy Smoked Gouda w/ Red Pepper

Creamy Chipotle w/ Roasted Corn and Black Bean Sauce

Golden Lentil w/ Madras Curry

Chicken & Quinoa w/ Poblano Chilies

Moroccan Style Chicken w/ Chickpeas

No, these aren’t the latest creations from your local food truck or the nicer restaurant down the street. These are the new soup flavors from Campbell’s. Yes, Campbell’s. The 140 year-old-company needed a little revitalization so what did they do? They went in search of some good old fashion hipsters. Because hipsters know everything about soup? I find it funny that in order to spice up the everyday “Broccoli and Cheese,” the folks over at Campbell’s turned to cool twenty-something year olds who’ve probably never eaten a can of soup in their lives (unless it was sold at Coachella, of course).

The result? Hipsters in Portland (food truck loving hipsters), San Francisco (foggy hipsters), and Austin (live music hipsters) apparently like to eat soup out of a pouch. Why do I see this being in some sort of Portlandia sketch – specifically within a “Bicycle Rights!” scene (see below). Fred Armisen could easily eat directly out of this new convenient pouch but what’s the fun in that? Picturing him opening a can and trying to use a spoon while dodging cars is definitely funnier. Either way, we’ve got more soup options now thanks to hipsters.

In other soup news, these are coming to Target shelves next week:
